Genesee Christian Defeats International Academy of Flint
October 19,
2010
Genesee
Christian volleyball played well against a much weaker IAF team. They beat the Phoenix in
three games 25-11. 25-11 and 25-9.
The Lady
Soldiers have improved a lot this year but still can’t seem to be consistent in their serving.
They are a young
team with only two seniors, Brooke Carmack and Lindsay Mowry, who played their last
home game against the Phoenix. Brooke Carmack had 3 kills, Michala Marino had 2 kills
and Brooke Gardner had 2 aces. In the JV game Rebecca Taulbee served 18 straight
serves. The JV took both games 25-4 and 25-13.
The Lady Soldiers
have one regular season game left and then head into the districts which are being held at Michigan School for
the Deaf. GCS plays MSD at 5:00 pm on Monday November 1st.
Division 4 District 57
Semifinal Game
GeneseeChristian Falls to #2-Ranked Lansing Christian
October 21,
2010
Genesee Christian
saw its season come to an end, falling to second ranked Lansing Christian 3-0 in the Division 4 District 57
semifinal game. The loss ended Genesee Christian's 15-game unbeaten streak and broke Genesee Christian's string
of 9 consecutive district titles - what was the longest streak in Genesee County.
Genesee
Christian's defense, led by senior captain Cody Klein and backstopped by senior captain Philip
Peavyhouse in goal, held Lansing Christian's high powered attack at bay during the first half, and the game
was tied 0-0 at intermission.
Halftime was cut
short by the referees due to the game's late start, and Genesee Christian was caught mentally not ready to start
the second half. A missed assignment led to a Lansing Christian goal less than 2 minutes into the half - Steve
Kim scored from near the penalty mark with an assist from Dillon Li.
Finding itself
down in the game, Genesee Christian had to open up and take more chances to try and generate some scoring
opportunites. This opened up the field for Lansing Christian who clearly was a much faster and better skilled
team. Lansing Christian scored two more times - Norlan Theis with an assist by J.C.Mahaffey and Steve Kim
unassisted getting the goals.
Genesee Christian
could not generate much offense, and the game was played mostly in the Genesee Christian end. Josh Lyon made
four saves for Lansing Christian but was not really tested on any of them.
Philip
Peavyhouse had another strong game
in goal, making 13 saves and another 11 plays to break up scoring opportunities. He knew he had to have a
perfect game to give his team a chance, but the Genesee Christian goalkeeper had no chance on the three Lansing
Christian goals which were all scored in the box in the vicinity of the penalty mark.
"Those were great
shots (by Lansing Christian)," Genesee Christian Coach Doug Anderson told his team. "They finished their
opportunities, and that is something we still need to learn."
Genesee Christian
finishes the season with a record of 13-5-2.

Homecoming Victory Over Royal Oak Shrine Catholic

Micah Forshee Scores First
Career Goal

Evan Park Crowned
Homecoming King
Genesee Christian
celebrated homecoming with a 4-2 victory over Royal Oak Shrine Catholic.
Genesee Christian
opened the scoring 11 minutes into the game. Senior captain Philip Peavyhouse punted the ball over the
Shrine Catholic defense, and freshman Clay Selby (10) beat the Shrine Catholic goalkeeper to ball and
directed it into the goal. Peavyhouse's punts created problems for Shrine Catholic all
evening.
Genesee Christian
scored again with 15 minutes remaining in the half. Sophomore Hunter Selby chased down another punt into
the right corner and passed to Clay Selby. Clay Selby sent a shot towards the left goal post, and
freshman Micah Forshee (1) banged it home for his first career goal.
Many of the of
the players seemed to lose their focus at halftime. Sophomore Austin Park, junior Jason Baxter,
senior captain Cody Klein and senior captain Evan Park spent halftime looking pretty and hanging
out with the homecoming queen and her court. Evan Park was so caught up posing for pictures with the
girls that he missed the start of the second half.
Genesee Christian
struck again early in the second half when Hunter Selby played a ball through to Clay Selby (11)
who knocked it in for his second goal of the game.
Genesee Christian
relaxed with a 3-goal lead and became a little loose on defense. It was a bad time to do so because Shrine
Catholic stepped up its intensity.
Shrine Catholic's
Frank Peaslee beat the Genesee Christian defense down the side and broke in unchallenged along the end line. His
crossing pass deflected off a Genesee Christian defender and was knocked in by Will McFarland to cut the Genesee
Christian lead down to two with 25 minutes remaining in the game.
Shrine Catholic
cut the deficit to one with 12 minutes remaining. Connor Lockman found an unmarked Frank Peaslee just inside the
eighteen. The defense inexplicably parted, giving him an uncontested shot, and Peaslee beat the Genesee
Christian goalkeeper.
Genesee Christian
started to lose its composure, but Coach Doug Anderson quickly got his team refocused. Genesee Christian
answered two minutes later with a goal of its own. Sophomore Quinton Foster made a crossing pass to
junior Michael VandenBerg (5) who buried a shot in the back of the net for the game's final
goal.

Enoch Carpenter Scores
First Career Goal
Genesee Christian
travelled to Lakeville and defeated the host team 5-0.
The only goal in
the first half was an unassisted goal 4-1/2 minutes into the game by junior Michael VandenBerg (4). The
Soldiers had trouble finishing during the rest of the half as they fired a flurry of shots over the
net.
As the half
continued without Genesee Christian getting another tally, Lakeville started to gain confidence and mounted a
more aggressive attack. But the Genesee Christian goalkeeper, senior captain Philip Peavyhouse, made two
big saves on shots from just outside the goal box to keep Lakeville from gaining any momentum in the first
half.
The Genesee
Christian offense exploded in the second half as the Soldiers tallied four more goals. Freshman Clay
Selby (8) scored an unassisted goal 4-1/2 minutes into the second half. At the midway point freshman
Caspian Peavyhouse redirected a pass to senior captain Cody Klein (4) who buried a shot from the
left side of the goal. Five minutes later Clay Selby (9) scored his second goal of the game with an
assist from sophomore Hunter Selby.
The final goal
came with 12 minutes left in the game. Lakeville had been whistled for dangerous play giving Genesee Christian
an indirect kick inside the penalty area. Cody Klein took the kick and blasted a shot at Lakeville's
defensive wall. Junior Enoch Carpenter (1) pounced on the rebound and put it into the lower right corner
for the first goal of his career.
The Genesee
Christian defense, led by Cody Klein, had another strong outing. Philip Peavyhouse finished with
six saves to earn his sixth shutout of the season.
"It was a good
team win," said Coach Doug Anderson. "Everybody got playing time and contributed to the win. The better our
bench plays, the better we become as a team. And that was a nice finish by Enoch
(Carpenter)."
Genesee Christian
improved to 10-4-1 with the victory and is now 5-0-1 against Genesee Area Conference opponents on the
season.
Philip
Peavyhouse made eight saves to
preserve the victory for Genesee Christian (11-4-1). The victory avenged a 3-2 loss to Shrine Catholic earlier
in the season
